Introduction to Science

A high quality science education provides the foundations for understanding the world through the specific disciplines of Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Science is vital to the world’s future prosperity. We believe that all students should be taught essential aspects of the knowledge, methods and uses of science. Through building up a body of key knowledge and concepts, students are encouraged to recognise the power of rational thought and develop a sense of curiosity about science in the world around them.

"An investment in knowledge pays the best interest."

Benjamin Franklin

Science at KS3

At KS3 Science students will demonstrate an understanding of the world through the specific disciplines of Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Environmental Science. They will have an appreciation of the role of scientists in society today and in the future.

Students will be able to communicate their knowledge and understanding of concepts using appropriate technical vocabulary in their written work, presentations and discussions.

Students will be able to make and test hypotheses through different types of enquiry. In practical contexts, they will safely handle a wide range of laboratory equipment and materials, showing care and accuracy in taking measurements, recording results and evaluate evidence to draw conclusions.

This is a program of study which has no national assessment at its end. Progress is closely monitored over this period with in-class topic assessments and end of term examinations set to ensure students demonstrate exceptional understanding and application of the scientific principles and procedures undertaken in class.

Science at KS4

At the end of year 11 those students undertaking the Separate Science course will sit a total of six 1hour 45min examinations across the three science disciplines (Physics, Chemistry and Biology) equating to 3 separately named science GCSE’s.

At the end of year 11 those students undertaking the Combined Trilogy Science course will sit a total of six 1 hour 15 min examinations across the three science disciplines (Physics, Chemistry and Biology) equating to 2 science GCSE’s.

(These qualifications are linear. Linear means that students will sit all their exams at the end of the course).
