Instrumental Music Tuition

As well as weekly classroom music lessons for all year 7, 8 and 9 pupils, we offer subsidised instrumental tuition with professional tutors in the following instruments:

  • Vocals: popular music vocals, musical theatre vocals

  • Strings: classical guitar, violin, ukulele, acoustic guitar, bass guitar, electric guitar

  • Woodwind: flute, clarinet, saxophone, oboe

  • Brass: trumpet, trombone, baritone, tuba

  • Percussion: drums, piano

Our instrumental tuition staff are highly qualified musicians, performing regularly around the North West and further afield. Many are also classroom teachers, music examiners, composers and researchers who are experienced in working with children and young people. They hold enhanced DBS certificates, are employed by Sefton Music Hub within Sefton Council and are fully trained in our school safeguarding procedures.

How does the instrumental tuition programme operate?

Lessons are offered in 20-minute time slots, once per week throughout the school day. Pupils will exit their timetabled lesson to attend their instrumental lesson. They will need to remember to bring their instrument and any sheet music to school on the correct day and exit lesson at the correct time, so wearing a watch with an alarm can be very helpful. Instruments can be left in the Music Department on the day for safe keeping.

Fees

Lesson costs are subsidised by school to keep parent/carer contributions as low as possible. Lessons for our BTEC Music students in Y10 and 11 remain free of charge, subject to satisfactory attendance.

Fees are payable half-termly, via School Gateway

  • £3 for a small group session, per week
  • £7 for a 20-minute individual session, per week

Children usually start off in small groups if they are beginners. If they make good progress and show commitment then you may wish for them to have an individual lesson to allow them to progress at their own pace.

Practice and progress

Your child will need access to a musical instrument at home in order to practice regularly and make progress. 15-20 mins per day will see the best results.

Each child will receive a booklet containing a practice log. Instrumental tutors can award praise points for evidence of regular practice.

Every child on the instrumental tuition programme is entitled to a free loan instrument from Sefton Music Service, allowing them to demonstrate commitment to their chosen instrument before they ask you to purchase one!

Throughout the year we will provide opportunities for pupils studying an instrument to perform for different events e.g. at primary schools, within the community and at whole school events. We will keep you informed of these and would love you to join us in supporting your child.

Pupils can also choose to work towards various external music exams, including Rock School, Trinity School of Music and Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music.
